Depiction, Pictorial Experience, and Vision Science

چکیده
Pictures are patterned, 2D surfaces designed to elicit 3Dscenerepresenting experiences from their viewers. In this essay, I argue that philosophers have tended to underestimate the relevance of research in vision science to understanding the nature of pictorial experience. Both the deeply entrenched methodology of virtual psychophysics as well as empirical studies of pictorial space perception provide compelling support for the view that pictorial experience and seeing facetoface are experiences of the same psychological, explanatory kind. I also show that an empirically informed account of pictorial experience provides resources to develop a novel, resemblancebased account of depiction. According to what I call the deep resemblance theory, pictures work by presenting virtual models of objects and scenes in phenomenally 3D, pictorial space. Most people think they know what a picture is. Anything so familiar must be simple. They are wrong. — Gibson 1980, xvii A picture is a patterned, 2D surface that, when present to sight, displays the appearance of an absent, threedimensionally organized scene. Consider the experience elicited by Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s painting The Hunters in the Snow (fig. 1). The objects that we experience in the painting— on the far side of the pictorial surface,

Depiction, Perception, and Imagination: Responses to Richard Wollheim
The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 60:1 Winter 2002 Richard Wollheim holds, famously, that pictorial representation is to be understood in terms of a visual experience of a special kind, which he calls “seeing-in,” an experience that suitable spectators enjoy when they look at pictures. On viewing a picture of a fire engine, one sees a fire engine in the marks on the surface of the pic...
متن کاملPictorial Cues in Art and in Visual Perception
Artists have been looking at the world for thousands of years, and thus paintings and drawings can be considered to form a -year-old corpus of experimental psychology of perception. Through observation and trial-and-error they have exploited the principles of how our brains interpret the input from the retina, giving priority to only certain regularities of the visual pattern. Thus, a stu...

متن کاملDiagrammatic Reasoning about Allen's Interval Relations
we explore different ways in which a computational model of diagrammatic reasoning can capture imagery experiences which subjects reported in an experiment on spatial reasoning. The algorithmic reconstruction of this particular reasoning process suggests that computational models of diagrammatic reasoning should be formulated at different levels of abstraction. Four levels are distinguished ord...
متن کاملInteraction of depth probes and style of depiction
We study the effect of stylistic differences on the nature of pictorial spaces as they appear to an observer when looking into a picture. Four pictures chosen from diverse styles of depiction were studied by 2 different methods. Each method addresses pictorial depth but draws on a different bouquet of depth cues. We find that the depth structures are very similar for 8 observers, apart from an ...
